Why cholesterol should be a worry
20/07/2006
According to the British Heart Foundation, as we grow older, we worry more about wrinkles and less about cholesterol than we should.
Heart disease still kills more men and women in England and Wales than any other condition (Office of National Statistics). And, nearly half these deaths are due to raised cholesterol.
Cholesterol levels are recommended to be below 5 mmol/l. However, on average, our cholesterol levels are above this, with men in England having an average of 5.5 mmol/l and women 5.6 mmol/l.
Whilst modern medicines have resulted in a reduction in deaths due to cardiovascular disease - in 2004 the death rate fell by 7% - positive steps can be taken by improving lifestyle. This means eating more healthily, for example, cutting down on saturated fats and also taking more exercise.
